Barreda the maverick

With 29 stage wins from twelve Dakars, Joan Barreda is up there with the greats. Only Peterhansel and Despres have more stage wins, with 33 apiece. But while "Bang Bang" is undeniably fast, he lacks something the two have in spades, Dakar victories. Last January, Barreda once again finished five times in the Top 5 and won on stages 2 and 4, to surpass his compatriot Jordi Arcarons, with whom he shared 27 special stage wins at the start of the 44th Dakar. But on stage 5, the Catalan once again hit the deck, injuring his shoulder. Not sure if he would be able to continue on the eve of the rest day, the HRC rider gritted his teeth and finished the race in 5th place overall, just like in 2017. It remains his best final finishing position on the Dakar. On his return to Spain, he posted X-rays and medical reports revealing a fractured collarbone and another to the pelvis. Rumours of 'Bang Bang's' retirement have again been circulating recently, but those close to him affirm he’ll be back in the saddle as soon as his health allows. He already proved back in 2021, after two years of doubt following his wrist operations, that he is capable of coming back to form. It is not however at all certain he’ll be at the start of the second round of the W2RC. Winner last year of the Andalucía Rally and the Baja Aragon, a navigational error came between him and victory on the Rallye du Maroc back in October, where he made his spectacular debut in 2011... Barreda remains Barreda: a maverick. He is also one of the most resilient riders in rally-raid and will be turning forty in August. After the Dakar he was fifth in the W2RC rankings with 17 points, just 7 points off the provisional podium.
