But in the hunt

One of the main protagonists of the World Cup for Cross-Country Rallies between 2014 and 2018, Vladimir Vasilyev won the FIA series that first year and followed that up with two second places and a 3rd in 2018. There then followed a quiet spell between 2019 and 2020 including two Dakar DNFs. In 2021 he was back among the frontrunners with notably a 6th place on the Dakar, his best result to date. Starting out from Jeddah last January with Oleg Uperenko, Martin Krotov’s old navigator, the newly formed duo maintained an overall position of between 4th and 8th in their BMW X5 silhouette X-Raid all the way to the last stage. But finishing 63rd on the last stage back to Jeddah they were finally classified 10th overall on the 44th edition. It was in Abu Dhabi in 2014 and 2015 that the Russian achieved his two best results on the international scene. An encouraging omen for the driver currently lying in 10th place overall in the W2RC rankings, just a few points behind Nani Roma (BRX) and Sebastián Halpern (X-Raid Mini JCW).
