Just lacking a little luck…

'Nacho' Cornejo’s rally-raid career took an unexpected turn just before the 2018 Dakar when, after withdrawing for financial reasons, he was called up by the Honda team just a few daysbefore the start as a replacement for an injured Paulo Gonçalves. Prior to this Cornejo had only competed on the 2016 Dakar and had retired on stage 5. The Chilean took full advantage of this exceptional opportunity to ride mistake-free to a 10 th place finish. In 2019, he worked hard to improve and achieved a well-deserved 8th. Now firmly established as a factory rider for the Monster Energy Honda Team, "Nacho" put in a sensational performance in 2020. Winning two stages, including the final day, he held off Ricky Brabec and battled for the top spot with Matthias Walkner and Luciano Benavides. In the 2021 Dakar, the rider from Iquique was leading the overall on stage 10 when he crashed heavily at km 252. Although he managed to finish the special, the Chilean was forced to retire after consulting the rally’s medical team. One of the top riders who took the wrong track on the second day of the 2022 Dakar, Cornejo posted his first special podium before suffering the famous "yo-yo" effect that his rivals suffered from in 2021. Despite four podiums, including two stage victories, the Honda official finished 6th overall, flanked by his team-mates Barreda (5th) and Brabec (7th). Holding this same 6th position in the world championship, in the past "Nacho" has always been stronger on the Dakar than on other, mid-season races. Considered by many to be one of the best riders currently racing he is capable of navigating at supersonic speed. A quality that the Chilean jockey will be able to employ on the third round of the W2RC in Morocco to full effect.
