Chasing after No 10!
The greatest rally driver of all time first competed on the Dakar in 2016. Aboard his factory Peugeot 2008 DKR he impressed right from the off and for a while looked on target to match Ari Vatanen’s 1987 feat of winning on his maiden appearance. On following editions mechanical problems and navigation errors, plus the injury of his co-driver Daniel Elena, all conspired to deprive Loeb of that elusive Dakar victory. Despite that, the nine times world champion has never given up the fight. After Peugeot pulled out he came back in 2019 at the wheel of a 3008, entered by PH Sport, with which he achieved a second final podium (3rd). Then last year he answered Prodrive’s call to drive their brand new Bahrain Raid Xtreme ‘Hunter’. In the end Loeb DNFed but his teammate ‘Nani’ Roma got his car home in 5th place overall. In 2022 Loeb and Roma were back again with the Hunter now in T1+ configuration. Without a single warm up race, Loeb was the only one able to challenge Nasser Al Attiyah all the way to Jeddah, showing both that he is still at the top of his game and that the BRX is a match the Hilux. Now accompanied by a new navigator in the shape of Fabian Lurquin, former co-driver for Mathieu Serradori, Loeb is currently 2nd in the W2RC rankings after the first Saudi round. The multi world champion has the chance to relaunch his rally-raid career and take a 10th world title, exactly 10 years after winning his last WRC crown. His recent Monte Carlo victory more than proved that approaching his 50s he is still highly competitive.
