Franco back on track

After a successful career in enduro, Franco made his Dakar debut in 2017, finishing 8th and best South American rider. On the 2018 Dakar everything was going according to plan when a problem with his clutch forced him to retire on stage 7. That same year Caimi suffered a serious leg fracture on the Rallye du Maroc. He then embarked on a race against the clock to recover in time for January. Doctors gave him the green light to start the 2019 Dakar, but the Argentinean was forced to throw in the towel on the third stage, his leg causing too much pain to continue. Franco Caimi’s first ‘Saudi’ Dakar however proved very positive. The only factory Yamaha at the finish, after Van Beveren and De Soultrait crashed out, the Argentinean took eighth place overall. In 2021, it was a crash on stage 7 and an engine problem on stage 8 that put an end to his ambitions. Let go by the Japanese manufacturer in April 2021, Franco moved on to the Hero Motosports team. Alongside Joaquim Rodrigues and Sebastian Bühler and riding the Indian firm’s brand-new machine, the Argentinean started off well with a 3rd place at the Silkway. But Wolfgang Fischer's new recruit was injured in Dubai in November 2021 while training, a few weeks before the start of the Dakar, ruling him out of the race. For his return at the second round of the W2RC, Franco finished eighth, which combined with Ross Branch’s third place and Joaquim Rodrigues’ sixth gives Hero Motosports 4th place in the manufacturers' standings. The Rallye du Maroc will be only Franco’s third World Championship race with the Hero Motosports team.
