David against the Goliaths

Martin Michek arrived on the rally-raid scene back in 2019 at the already advanced age of 33, the Czech rider coming to the sport after a busy career in international motocross. 18 times national champion and twice runner up in the MX3 motocross world championship in 2012 and 2013 - defeated by a certain Matthias Walkner… Before crossing swords again on his first Dakar in Saudi Arabia with the man he hopes to emulate, Michek acclimatised to the discipline on the Baja Aragon and then the Rally of Morocco. For his first Dakar, he fought for the ‘best rookie’ title with Jaume Betriu, until a mechanical problem on the penultimate stage knocked him out of the Top 15 and relegated him to 23rd place overall. After a whole season without racing in rally-raid, he was back on the 2021 Dakar and finished a remarkable 10th place just behind... Matthias Walkner. Second privateer behind Svitko (8th overall), he continued his apprenticeship last year by competing in and winning the Baja World Cup. Then last January, for his third Dakar, despite finishing half the stages in the Top 15, as in 2020, he ran into problems on the penultimate stage and finished the day in 117th position. Undefeated, the following day in Jeddah the Czech decided to enter the W2RC this season. Along with Frenchman Xavier de Soultrait, he is the only privateer to have scored points in the world championship at the end of the first round of W2RC. In the absence of the former, who announced his retirement just after the Dakar, Michek will be the only privateer to continue his World Championship adventure in the premier class.
