Compared to his rivals, Lucas del Río doesn't have a ‘classic’ motorsport background and only started competing in rally-raid a couple of years ago. Lucas’ day job is as a New York trained actor. He did some karting and rode enduro when he was younger but as a total amateur. For his first outing in an SSV, the Chilean entered the 2020 Atacama Rally and won the first stage he ever raced! Finishing on the final podium, he decided to follow in the footsteps of illustrious compatriots like Henán Garcés, Luis Eguiguren and Francisco ‘Chaleco’ López, join South Racing team and enter the 2021 Andalucía Rally and the Rallye du Maroc, in parallel to some national championship races. For his first Dakar last January, Lucas wasn’t there just to make up the numbers. Finishing between 10th and 15th over the first half of the race, despite losing an hour with mechanicals problems, the Chilean ran into more serious mechanical issues on stage 8. In the end he finished in 36th position in his category, far from his true potential. Now thoroughly bitten by the bug, he is embarking on a second ‘learning’ year. Eighth in the W2RC provisional standings in his category after the Dakar, his fourth place in the W2RC T4 standings on the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge allowed him to move up to sixth position. In the Emirates, it was Alvaro Léon who took care of his navigation. On the Rallye du Maroc , it will be the turn of Bruno Jacomy who had teamed up with Thomas Bell on the Dakar in the South Racing team. While he had been a co-driver for five seasons in Latin America, the Argentinean discovered the international FIA World Cup circuit in 2021 by taking part in the Andalucía Rally.
